Heritage Weekend - May 1st, 2nd, and 3rd 2020

March 3 2020 | news

Through music, dance, demonstrations, exhibits, and hands-on activities, Destrehan Plantation takes a look back at the 19th century in south Louisiana during Heritage Weekend on Friday, May 1st through Sunday, May 3rd, 2020.

Heritage Weekend offers period music by Kitchen Session, Reaux, Roscoe, and Abadie and James Linden Hogg, dancing by the Feliciana Vintage Dancers, Nkiruka Drum and Dance Ensemble, and singing of sea songs with the NO Quarter Shanty Krew. The War of 1812 and the Civil War are recalled through re-enactors in period attire and battle re-enactments.

Visitors may engage in hands-on activities such as making butter, candies, and church dolls and create original art under the guidance of the St. Charles Art Guild. Numerous exhibits/demonstrations on topics such as open-hearth cooking, needlework, spinning, indigo dying, tignon-making, the 1811 Slave Revolt, voodoo, Native Americans, antique irons and old time toys create a sense of 19th century Louisiana life. The performances, demonstrations exhibits and hands-on activities vary each day. Please check the Destrehan Plantation webpage for a list of complete activities.
